Philadelphia Ends Skid but Lindros Is Injured

Eric Lindros scored twice before leaving because of a rib injury Monday as the Philadelphia Flyers ended a winless streak at four games and stopped St. Louis’ home unbeaten streak at nine games with a 5-1 victory over the Blues.

Lindros left the game after two periods because of what was announced as bruised ribs. Lindros has nine goals and 25 points to lead the NHL in scoring.

New York 2, Edmonton 2--The Rangers have this comeback thing down cold at Madison Square Garden.

“We really battled hard and unfortunately, this tie wasn’t what we wanted, we wanted a win.,” New York’s Wayne Gretzky said.

Pat LaFontaine scored late in the second period as the Rangers pulled off the comeback.

Carolina 5, Vancouver 3--It has been like a broken record emanating from the mouth of Hurricane Coach Paul Maurice--shoot, shoot, shoot.

The Hurricanes burned the worst defensive club in the NHL for two goals in a 46-second span in the first period, and two more in a nine-second span in the second period at Greensboro, N.C.

Montreal 6, Dallas 4--Shayne Corson, who scored only six goals in 47 games after coming to the Canadiens in a trade with St. Louis last season, scored goals 2:12 apart in the second period, and Andy Moog made 18 saves in his first start against his former team at Montreal.

The sale of the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers by Peter Pocklington to Les Alexander, owner of the NBA’s Houston Rockets, will be announced in a news conference in Edmonton today, a team spokesman said Monday night. Bryn Griffiths, an assistant public relations director with the team, told Reuters the news conference would be “about ownership of the team.” The team will be sold to Alexander on a conditional basis. Some newspaper reports have said the deal will be worth $80 million with Pocklington retaining 10% ownership. Pocklington put the Oilers up for sale last June.

Carolina Hurricane goaltender Sean Burke, charged with assaulting his wife and jailed on Sunday, was released on Monday and is expected to return to practice today. Team officials had said before the the Hurricanes’ game against Vancouver Monday night that Burke was out for personal reasons. But a Wake County (N.C.) magistrate confirmed Burke’s arrest on the charge of assault. The woman’s name was not listed in the jail records, but it was confirmed that the alleged assault involved Burke’s wife, Leslie.

Mike Gartner, one of the most top scorers in NHL history, will be sidelined for the Phoenix Coyotes from four to six weeks because of a knee injury he suffered in his team’s 3-1 victory over Calgary Sunday night. Gartner, 38, needs two more goals to become the fifth player in NHL history with 700.
