Buffalo 4, Edmonton 4--Jason Dawe scored three goals in just over six minutes of the second period to rally the Sabres from three goals down to tie the Oilers at Buffalo.

Edmonton tied the score with 4:24 remaining on a goal by Dan McGillis on Buffalo goalie Steve Shields, who replaced starter Dominik Hasek after the first period when Hasek gave up three goals on only nine shots.

Edmonton rolled to a 3-0 lead in the first period on goals by Ryan Smyth, Mike Grier and Boris Mironov.

New Jersey 3, N.Y. Islanders 1--Martin Brodeur stopped 28 shots for his seventh consecutive win and the Devils received goals from Patrick Elias, Valeri Zelepukin and Bobby Carpenter at Uniondale, N.Y.

Cassels’ goal spoiled a shutout bid by Chicago goaltender Jeff Hackett, who played for the first time since Oct. 4.

Hackett, who stopped 29 shots, hadn’t played since suffering a sprained right ankle during Chicago’s second game.

Chris Simon, the suspended left wing of the Washington Capitals, will find out today if the NHL will further discipline him for making a racial slur at an African-American player.

Simon will meet with Brian Burke, the league’s director of hockey operations, to explain his actions toward Edmonton Oiler forward Mike Grier.

Simon, an American Indian, directed the remark at Grier near the end of the game last Saturday night, according to players and game officials.

“That’s what was strange to me--that it was someone who has his background and his race,” Grier said. “I didn’t expect it to come from another minority. It’s just a little more shocking.”
