Larson Scores 6 Goals in Marina Victory

Jeff Larson dominated the game, scoring six goals to help Marina beat defending Division II champion El Dorado, 7-3, in the first round of Southern Section boys’ water polo playoffs Friday at El Dorado High.

Larson, who also had seven steals, scored his final goal to make it 7-1 in the fourth quarter with 3 minutes 36 seconds remaining.

Goalie Mark Armstrong had 10 saves and Craig Chlebicki had four steals and an assist for the Vikings, who improve to 17-10. Ryan Watkins had 11 saves for El Dorado, which finished the season 13-13.

Marina plays second-seeded Costa Mesa in a second-round game Wednesday.

In other Division II games:

Esperanza 10, Garden Grove 3--Tied, 1-1, at the end of the first quarter, Esperanza blew it open in the second quarter with five goals. Travis Vayssie had three goals and teammates Jeff Burmelster and Hans Steimann each had two. Esperanza (17-10) hosts Laguna Beach in the second round Tuesday.

La Habra 9, University 7 (OT)--La Habra’s Nathan Allard scored with three seconds left in regulation to send it to overtime, when Jeremy Greenberg and Jared Powell scored the winning goals. The Highlanders (18-9) play Servite in the second round Wednesday.

Laguna Beach 23, Tustin 5--Tyler Reynard and Spencer Dornin each scored six goals for Laguna Beach (18-8).

Los Alamitos 17, Cypress 0--Senior two-meter man Tyler Wawrzynski scored eight goals for the No. 1-seeded team in Division II. The Griffins play Empire League-champion Katella in the second round Wednesday.

Servite 24, Pacifica 6--Dane Jensen scored seven goals for host Servite (14-9) in its first-round victory over Pacifica (5-8).

In Division VI:

Brea Olinda 25, Cerritos 3--Matt Flesher had nine goals to lead No. 2-seeded Brea Olinda against wild-card winner Cerritos. Mark Becker had five goals for the Wildcats (17-9). Brea Olinda plays Palos Verdes Peninsula Chadwick in a second-round game.
