It’s old an story: Leave the Clippers and leave your troubles behind.

But it keeps getting rewritten.

Yet another former member of the long-suffering team found success in an new uniform Saturday night.

With only nine players in uniform because of injuries to Penny Hardaway (knee), Rony Seikaly (neck) and Derek Harper (leg bruise), former Clipper Bo Outlaw scored a career-high 24 points on nine-for-nine shooting to lead the Orlando Magic to a 102-91 victory over the Washington Wizards at Landover, Md.

Chris Webber and Juwan Howard did not dress for Washington because of back injuries. Rod Strickland scored 24 and Tracy Murray 23 for the Wizards, now 0-3 at home.

Pistons 96, Nets 88--Lindsey Hunter scored a career-high 35 points and played all 53 minutes at Auburn Hills, Mich., to lead his team to an overtime triumph.

Detroit trailed by 11 at the start of the fourth quarter, but held the Nets to 12 fourth-quarter points.

Both teams were badly undermanned. Detroit lost Grant Hill to flu, and New Jersey needed a roster exemption to sign Xavier McDaniel and dress 10 players.

Malik Sealy scored 22 points and Brian Williams had 21 and 12 rebounds for Detroit.

Cassell led the Nets with 29 points and Jayson Williams had 13 and 18 rebounds.

Miami 96, Denver 93--Tim Hardaway scored the last of his 26 points on a three-point shot with 1.9 seconds left at Miami to keep the Nuggets winless.

Hardaway matched a career-high with 11 rebounds, eight in the third quarter, and had eight assists.

Denver’s 0-8 start is the worst in team history, surpassing an 0-7 mark in the 1990-91 season.

Portland 99, Golden State 87--Kenny Anderson made two three-point baskets during a decisive 12-0 run in the third quarter at Oakland that helped keep the Warriors winless.

Golden State (0-8) let its first halftime lead of the season slip away to the Trail Blazers, who recovered from a four-overtime loss on Friday to win for the sixth time in seven games.

Minnesota 105, San Antonio 94--Kevin Garnett scored 26 points, Tom Gugliotta scored 23 and the two showed no fear of taking on the Spurs’ big men at San Antonio.

Garnett and Gugliotta went strong to the basket throughout the game against David Robinson and Tim Duncan and capitalized by getting plenty of trips to the foul line. Garnett finished 8-of-11 in free-throw shooting, Gugliotta nine of 10.

Robinson led all scorers with 29 points and pulled down 18 rebounds. Duncan had 15 points and 17 rebounds.

Chicago 79, Cleveland 70--Michael Jordan scored 27 points and Dennis Rodman pulled down 18 rebounds at Chicago, where the Bulls avenged one of their most embarrassing losses in years.

Last Tuesday, Cleveland routed Chicago, 101-80, in what Bull Coach Phil Jackson called his team’s worst performance since Jordan came out of retirement in March 1995.

Saturday, the Cavaliers shot 37% and committed 27 turnovers in registering their lowest point total of the season.

Vancouver 109, Milwaukee 94--Shareef Abdur-Rahim’s 24 points was a key to the Grizzlies’ victory at Vancouver.

Another key was the bench. On a night when they were forced to play without regular starters Bryant Reeves (ankle sprain) and Anthony Peeler (sore knee), the Grizzlies got a superb performance from their reserves, who outscored the Bucks’ reserves, 37-18.

But the biggest key was the fact that Vancouver held Milwaukee to only eight points in the fourth quarter to win its third in a row at home.

Terrell Brandon led Milwaukee with 22 points and 13 assists.

Boston 107, Philadelphia 101--The Celtics’ Antoine Walker had 25 points and 13 rebounds at Philadelphia, where the 76ers lost their ninth home game in a row. Their last victory on their home court was last season against Boston.

Jerry Stackhouse had 23 points for the 76ers. Derrick Coleman had 18 rebounds and 16 points.

Philadelphia Coach Larry Brown was unable to explain his team’s dismal performance at home, where it is 0-4 this season.

“It has nothing to do with the crowd,” he said. “Maybe some guys think of this as a time to showcase their talents instead of focusing on playing as a team.”

Indiana 105, Toronto 77--Chris Mullin scored 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting and Rik Smits added 19 points at Toronto to enable the Pacers to continue their dominance of the Raptors. Indiana is unbeaten in nine games with Toronto.

The Raptors, who shot only 42% from the field, lost their sixth in a row.

New York 114, Sacramento 87--King guard Mitch Richmond, the subject of several trade rumors, including one involving the Lakers’ Eddie Jones and another involving the Knicks, scored a team-high 18 points against the Knicks at New York. But it wasn’t enough to stop New York from winning its third game in a row.

Richmond has led his team in scoring in all nine of its games.

John Starks scored 19 points to lead eight Knicks in double figures.

Utah 85, Dallas 77--Karl Malone scored 26 points and made two clutch baskets late in the game at Dallas in the Jazz’s third consecutive victory.
