Band Marches Away With Honors

The Fountain Valley High School Royal Regiment Marching Band and Color Guard won top honors at two recent Orange County tournaments by performing music from the Kevin Costner film “Waterworld.”

Using costumes and props similar to those of the apocalyptic film, the regiment’s 175 members impressed judges at tournaments three hours apart on a recent Saturday at Savanna High School in Anaheim and Westminster High School. They played four selections from the film.

At Westminster, members won categories for band performance, color guard and general effects, which is similar to showmanship. At Savanna, they won best band, percussion and general effects.

“The kids worked really hard,” said John Lew, whose daughter Janice, 16, plays French horn. “They started working on this in July.”

This is the first time the group has won the prestigious Savanna contest in Gary Wampler’s 16 years as band director, Lew said.

The regiment competes again Saturday at Huntington Beach High School and Dec. 6 at Eddie West Field in the Santa Ana Bowl.
