Golden West Wins Cuesta Tournament

Andre Pedronis had three goals, including two two-pointers, to lead Golden West to a 13-5 victory over West Valley in the final of the Cuesta water polo tournament Saturday.

Robert Grayeli, Ivan Vranjes and Mike Peetz each scored two goals and goalkeeper Ryan Brown had 12 saves for Golden West (8-0), which won this tournament last season.

In the semifinals, Peetz scored three goals to lead Golden West over Saddleback, 9-7. Chris Carnanhan had two goals for the Gauchos (7-2).

At the Fresno Cross-Country Invitational:

Santa Ana men win--Santa Ana had four runners place among the top 25 to take the men’s title with 75 points. Mike Avellan finished fifth for Santa Ana with a time of 21 minutes 35 seconds over four miles at Woodward Park.

West Valley’s Juan Miramontes won the race in 20:36.

Orange Coast finished 11th.

Orange Coast women win--Christine Riel finished second in 19:09 as Orange Coast won the women’s title. American River’s Jen Schindler won in 18:28 over 3.1 miles at Woodward Park.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

Cypress 3, Ventura 0--Keri Bates had eight saves as Cypress shut out Ventura (5-1). Sheri Smith, Nicole Terry and Heather Mears each scored for the Chargers (6-1).
