CSUN’s Carr Injures Knee

Markus Carr, a promising Cal State Northridge freshman point guard from Palmdale High, severely injured a knee during a pickup game last week and might be lost for the season.

Carr, an All-Valley selection, averaged 20.3 points and 5.3 assists for Palmdale last season.

* Turning pro: Jason Gore of Valencia, a former Hart High star who led Pepperdine to the 1997 NCAA golf title, will make his professional debut at the Nike Tour Boise Open Sept. 18 in Boise, Idaho.

Gore, the California Amateur champion and 1997 Walker Cup team member, earned a sponsor exemption into the event.

* Can’t hold on: The Moorpark College soccer team used a goal by former Kennedy High standout Nikki Hagouel to take a halftime lead Sunday before falling to San Diego Mesa, 3-1, in a nonconference match at Moorpark.

The Cal State Northridge women’s soccer team (0-6) surrendered three second-half goals and fell to Oregon, 3-0, Sunday in a nonconference match in Portland.

* Deuces wild: Westlake and Harvard-Westlake are ranked No. 2 in separate girls’ volleyball state preseason polls.

Westlake is behind Mountain View St. Francis in Division II. Harvard-Westlake is behind Bishop Montgomery in Division III.

Flintridge Sacred Heart is No. 5 in the Division IV poll.

* Fry cooks: Tommy Fry of Simi Valley finished second in the Winston Racing Series Late-model points standings at Mesa Marin Raceway with 785 points.
