John Myers, three-time National Hot Rod Assn. pro stock motorcycle champion and a four-time winner of the Winston Finals at Pomona, was killed Sunday while riding with friends near Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Myers, 40, died of massive internal injuries after reportedly losing control of his cycle and striking a guardrail.

The second-winningest rider in NHRA history with 33 national event victories while riding with George Bryce’s Star Racing Suzuki team, Myers recently left that team and announced plans to run his own operation.

Last year, he finished second to Matt Hines in season standings, but won the prestigious U.S. Nationals for the second consecutive year.

“The tragic loss of John deeply saddens us all,” said NHRA president Dallas Gardner. “John was truly one of the good guys, not only in our sport, but in his everyday life. Without John’s presence in the motorcycle drag racing fraternity, the program simply would not have developed to the level it enjoys today.”

Services will be held Thursday at the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in Talladega, Ala.

Survivors include his wife Kerry and daughter Christina, 2, of Birmingham, Ala.
