Planning to Put a Lid on City Hall’s Trash Problem

Share

Taking the battle against waste in city government to a new level, Councilwoman Cindy Miscikowski has proposed a crackdown on garbage profligates at City Hall South.

The proposal will initiate a pilot program, sponsored by the city’s Department of General Services, that will replace trash cans with tiny receptacles “about the size of one of those [7-Eleven] Super Big Gulp cups,” said Lisa Gritzner, a Miscikowski deputy.

“They believe that whatever waste you generate should be able to fit into that little Big Gulp cup,” she said. Employees will also be encouraged to recycle and to curb garbage-producing habits such as eating from disposable plates.

Part of a citywide effort to reduce garbage sent to landfills by 2000, the program is expected to prevent about 10 tons of trash from being generated in the building this year.
