Loyola Starts Research Program for Community College Students

Loyola Marymount University has received a $397,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to establish an engineering research program that will give students at 20 community colleges the opportunity to conduct engineering research during a 10-week period each summer.

As part of the Research Experience for Undergraduate Students Program, students who are nominated by their community colleges will attend lectures and workshops and will be given a specific research project, primarily in the area of materials and manufacturing engineering. They will be encouraged to publish the results and earn university credit.

Norm Schneider, a spokesman for the university, said that engineering is one of the fastest-growing majors at the university. He said the summer program--which will be funded for three years beginning this summer--seeks to provide experience while encouraging engineering students at community colleges to complete their four-year degrees at Loyola.
