TRACK AND FIELD

* Newport Harbor at Edison, 3 p.m. today: An interesting matchup will be in the girls’ high jump between Newport Harbor’s April Ross and Edison’s Cathy Mullee. Mullee already has cleared 5-4 this season and Ross, a returning Times all-county second-team pick, cleared a personal-best 5-6 in 1997. Both jumped 5-2 at Saturday’s Irvine Invitational.

* Jack Bighead Relays at Katella HS, 2:30 p.m. Friday and Santa Ana College, 8:30 a.m. Saturday: The 25th running of the event named after Katella’s first varsity track and field coach consists entirely of relay and combined-scoring field events. The participating teams are divided into two divisions based on strength of programs. Some of the participating teams include Mission Viejo, El Toro, Tustin, and Fountain Valley. The girls’ varsity field events will take place on Friday and all of the running events and the boys’ varsity field events will be held Saturday.
