Burroughs Gets Splashy, 32-0

Jason Falitz continued his assault on the Burroughs High record for goals in a season and helped the Indians get in the Southern Section record book with a 32-0 victory over Alhambra in an Almont League water polo game Wednesday at Alhambra High.

Falitz, who had 14 goals in a game earlier this season, had 12 against Alhambra. He has scored 149 times this season, 12 shy of the school record set by Alfonso Tucay in 1996.

Justin Frank, Alex Triandos and Julian Cambustian each added four goals for the Indians (14-6, 1-1 in league play), who moved into a tie for 10th for most goals scored in a Southern Section game.

Goalies Nick Triandos and Bart Bagdasryan combined for the shutout, believed to be the first in Burroughs history.

Triandos had six saves and Bagdasryan had two.

In other boys’ water polo games:

Agoura 10, Newbury Park 4--Mike Campbell scored two of his three goals in the first quarter and the Chargers won a Marmonte League game at Agoura.

Ian Silvers, Dusty Sloan and Hans Larsen had two goals each for Agoura (12-7, 4-0), which plays Royal on Friday in a game that is expected to decide the league title.

Goalie Justin Rosa had 11 saves for Agoura.

Rio Mesa 14, Oxnard 9--Matt Rockwell scored two of his three goals in the fourth quarter, helping the Spartans (7-9, 2-2) break a 9-9 tie in a Frontier League game at Freedom Park in Camarillo.

Goalies Dan Improta and Todd Conrad held Oxnard scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Conrad scored three goals before taking over at goalie midway through the fourth quarter. He had four saves in three minutes.

Improta had 10 saves.

Nordhoff 23, Villanova 10--Senior Cory Gustafson, normally a defensive specialist, scored acareer-high 10 goals and two-meter man Danny Shephard had six for the Rangers (5-12, 2-2) in a Frontier League game at Nordhoff.

Ryan Yee had seven goals for Villanova (2-5, 0-4).

Glendale 18, Hoover 6--Kevin Witt had eight goals and 15 steals for the Dynamiters in a Pacific League game at Glendale.

Ben Lee had 14 saves for the Dynamiters (13-2, 4-0).

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Van Nuys def. Monroe, 15-10, 15-11, 15-0--Margot Wallace had four aces and Fah Vasunilashorn had three of her four blocks in the third game to help the Wolves (7-2, 7-1) complete a sweep in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Monroe.

Wallace finished with 11 kills, 10 digs and 16 assists and Vasunilashorn added eight kills.

Debbie Lim added 10 kills and 20 digs for Van Nuys (7-2, 7-1).

Crescenta Valley def. Pasadena, 15-8, 15-12, 15-5--Tracy Jackson, Mele Misi and Melinda Moulden each had seven kills for the Falcons (10-3, 6-0) in a Pacific League victory at Pasadena.

Arcadia def. Hoover, 10-15, 15-10, 15-8, 13-15, 15-9--Bridget Pearson had 20 kills and six blocks, and Triza Caballero added 15 kills for the Tornadoes (6-6, 3-3) in a Pacific League setback at Hoover.

Campbell Hall def. Pasadena Poly, 15-13, 15-10, 1-15, 6-15, 15-3--Lexi Kotelko had 18 kills and Lacey Herrick added 11 for the Vikings in a Delphic League victory at Campbell Hall.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Simi Valley 19, Newbury Park 36; Simi Valley 15, Moorpark 50; Newbury Park 20, Moorpark 38--Amanda Anderson won in 19:48 over the three-mile course at Corriganville Park in Simi Valley, helping the Pioneers (6-0, 6-0) win a Marmonte League double-dual meet.

Jennifer Turk of Newbury Park (4-2, 4-2) finished second in 20:01, followed by Ashley Luna of Simi Valley in 20:06.

The Pioneers took four of the first five places.

Birmingham 20, El Camino Real 35--Jamie Newman won in 19:16 for the Conquistadores (1-1, 1-1) but Erika Dolezal ran 19:40 and the Patriots (2-0, 2-0) took four of the first five places in a Northwest Valley Conference victory at Pierce College.

North Hollywood 20, Grant 37--Sophomore Natalie Stein won a Valley Pac-8 Conference meet at Pierce College by almost two minutes for the Huskies (2-0, 2-0), clocking 18:26 over the three-mile course.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Newbury Park 25, Simi Valley 30; Newbury Park 22, Moorpark 33; Simi Valley 22, Moorpark 33--Patrick Dolan of Newbury Park out-kicked Richard Chetwynd of Simi Valley to help the Panthers (4-2) win a Marmonte League double-dual meet at Corriganville Park in Simi Valley.

Dolan clocked 16:27 over the three-mile course to Chetwynd’s 16:33.

Birmingham 28, El Camino Real 31--Jesse Knutsen and Chris Wells-Anders ran career bests to lead the field over the three-mile course at Pierce College but the Conquistadores (1-1, 1-1) lost in a Northwest Valley Conference meet.

Knutsen finished first in 16:35 and Wells-Anders was second in 16:57.

Birmingham is 2-0, 2-0.
