Renaming LAX

Share

Recently, after booking a flight out of Los Angeles International Airport, I got to thinking about the airport’s moniker. I remember the latest proposals to rename the airport after Jimmy Stewart or Ronald Reagan. It seems to me that name of the airport should reflect the dynamic, energetic city Los Angeles is. It is the hub of the entertainment industry. It is an ethnic melting pot. It is a player on the world stage, economically and politically. So I propose we rename LAX the Francis Albert Sinatra International Airport.

In so many ways, this ItalianAmerican embodied the ideals of L.A. By renaming the airport, Los Angeles can call attention to the romance, swagger and desire to entertain that this city has in common with the late singer. Moreover, most travelers will agree with me that there is a certain panache mentioning “Sinatra” in the same breath as mentioning a well-deserved vacation or important meeting you’re flying to. There are other advantages too.

The name Frank Sinatra will no doubt be around for a long time. However, the image of Sinatra is what we’re talking about here. With its “no apologies given” style of architecture and the brash city that is its home, LAX is the one airport worthy of carrying this name and image forward. It’s a good match.
