Davila Chosen Coach of CSUN Men’s Soccer

Terry Davila, a former player and assistant soccer coach for Cal State Northridge, was hired Tuesday to succeed Marwan Ass’ad as the Matador men’s coach.

Davila, co-coach at Reseda High last season, played for Ass’ad at Northridge after graduating from Reseda in 1988, when he was selected City Section player of the year after leading the Regents to the City title.

He served as Assad’s top assistant from 1995-97, and has coached club-level soccer throughout the region.

GOLF

* Brandon Christianson, 13, of Valencia won a regional competition in the Toyota Skills Challenge for the second consecutive year Sunday at Vista Valencia Golf Course.

Christianson, a seventh-grader at La Mesa Junior High, equaled the tournament record of 10 points in the competition, which tests in of all ages players eight skills.

“I didn’t think that was possible,” Christianson said of his score, noting that the rules were altered this year.

In the past, a player could score a zero by holing a shot in any of the eight categories, but this year one was the lowest possible score.

Christianson scored ones in the long drive, middle iron, pitch over a hazard, trouble shot, chip shot and bunker shot, and twos in short iron and putting.

Jeff Siembieda, who plays on the Hart golf team, won the boys’ 14-17 division with 15 points.

Kathryn Enright of Santa Clarita won the women’s division at 18 and Nick Delio of Valencia took the boys’ 11-and-under division, also at 18.

TENNIS

* The City Section boys’ playoffs begin today with 1998 runner-up El Camino Real seeded No. 2 in the City Championship bracket behind defending champion Palisades.

El Camino Real hosts No. 7-seeded Eagle Rock at 1:30 p.m. at the Warner Center Racket Club in Woodland Hills.

Granada Hills, which lost to the Conquistadores in the semifinals last season, is seeded No. 3 and will host sixth-seeded Carson.

Chatsworth is seeded No. 1 in the Division bracket and will host Birmingham.

VOLLEYBALL

* Ryan Millar, a senior middle blocker at Brigham Young, was selected to the All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation team.

Millar, from Highland High, leads the No. 1-ranked Cougars in blocks and hitting percentage.

Middle blocker Matt Prosser of Long Beach State, from Buena High, was a second-team selection.

Mac Wilson, a middle blocker for BYU who also played at Highland, was a third-team selection.

Outside hitter George Roumain of Pepperdine was selected MPSF player of the year.

TRACK AND FIELD

* Annetta Wells of Cal State Northridge has been selected Big Sky Conference women’s track performer of the week after setting two conference records in the California-Nevada championships at UC San Diego last weekend.

Wells, a sophomore, ran 23.52 in winning her qualifying heat of the 200 meters on Saturday and ran the anchor leg on Northridge’s 400 relay team that won the final in 44.82 on Sunday.

WRESTLING

* Senior John Garfinkel of Highland, third-place finisher in the 160-pound weight class at the state meet, has signed with Stanford.

Garfinkel will receive a partial athletic scholarship and a partial academic scholarship.

BASKETBALL

* Chick Epstein has resigned as girls’ coach at Birmingham and will be replaced by Holly Wilson.

* Kevin Kanemura, boys’ coach at Van Nuys since 1995, has resigned to become the coach at Kennedy.
