Santa Ana Reliever Patton Holds Off Golden West, 10-9

Santa Ana scored three times in the top of the seventh to break a tie and defeat Golden West, 10-9, in Orange Empire Conference baseball Tuesday at Golden West.

The Dons had scored four runs in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead, but Golden West came back with two in the bottom of the fourth, and went ahead, 7-6, in the fifth when Bobby Mayorga scored on Ryan Brown’s sacrifice fly.

The Dons (25-14, 11-9) had 10 hits, eight of them for extra bases.

Golden West (16-22, 6-14) pounded out 13 hits in 4 1/3 innings against Santa Ana starter D.J. Houlton but had less luck against reliever Clint Patton.

Patton retired the first nine batters he faced before giving up a double by Reuben Gulledge and a two-run homer by Eric Archer in the eighth.

Patton earned his first victory, giving up two runs and four hits in 4 2/3 innings.

In other Orange Empire Conference baseball:

Cypress 14, Fullerton 4--Cypress pounded out 17 hits, failing to score only in the seventh inning. Ulises Cabrera was two for four with three RBIs and Brandon Pack had three hits with two runs scored.

Saddleback 15, Riverside 5--Saddleback kept its half-game lead on Cypress with the victory at home. Jimmy Luster had two home runs and five RBIs and Jason Marian was four for four with two RBIs for the Gauchos (28-11, 13-7).

In the Southern California Regional men’s tennis championships:

Saddleback 5, Marymount 0--Fourth-ranked Saddleback (17-0) defeated No. 2 Marymount (19-2) in a semifinal at Long Beach City College. Saddleback’s John Cappello beat Boris Turkic of Marymount, 6-3, 6-2. Saddleback advanced to the final and will play College of the Desert.
