Derek Cheung has been appointed vice president of research and director of the Rockwell Science Center, the principal research laboratory for the electronic controls and communications company.
Cheung succeeds Joe Longo, vice president of research and general manager of the center, who announced plans to retire early next year after a 31-year career with Rockwell.
Cheung, 50, joined the Science Center in 1975 as a member of the technical staff after receiving a PhD in electrical engineering from Stanford University. He has held various technical and management positions, including leadership positions in electro-optics, optics, high-speed electronics and electronic systems research. His most recent position was vice president and chief scientist.
The Rockwell Science Center, with sites in Thousand Oaks and Palo Alto, performs research in the physical and information sciences for Rockwell's businesses, the U.S. government and various commercial customers.
