Top Surfers Invade Huntington Beach

The Shockwave U.S. Open of Surfing begins today on the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier.

The mainland’s largest surf contest launches two weeks of surfing in Huntington Beach with the Gotcha Pro proceeding the weeklong event.

The contest will showcase more than 700 competitors with competition in men’s, women’s and junior surfing, bodyboarding and longboarding.

The event will include top surfers like Rob Machado (Cardiff), Pat O’Connell (Laguna Niguel), Tim Curran (Ventura), Hawaiians Shane Dorian, Sunny Garcia and the defending champion Andy Irons.

In the women’s events, world champion Layne Beachley of Australia will be surfing against top competitors like Rochelle Ballard (Hawaii), Brazilian Tita Tavarez, who won the event last year, and Serena Brooke of Australia.

Competition starts today at 7 with the first round of the BZ Bodyboard competition. The junior trials begin at 9:40 a.m. and the women’s and longboarding competitions at 3 p.m.
