Kao, Loucks Move Into Tennis Quarterfinals

Joseph Kao of Fullerton defeated Brian Morton of Costa Mesa, 6-4, 6-1, to advance to the quarterfinals in the boys’ 16s division of the Southern California Junior Tennis Championships Thursday at Los Caballeros in Fountain Valley.

Also in the boys’ 16s division, Matthew Loucks of Irvine defeated seventh-seeded Jeff Kazarian of Rolling Hills Estates, 7-5, 6-1.

In the boys’ 18s, Mission Viejo’s Javier Carrillo lost to Carl McCafferty of Highland, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

In the girls’ 18s, Caylan Leslie of Newport Beach, the Ojai tournament champion, lost to Bernadette Bayani of Simi Valley, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

In the girls’ 16s, Amberly Tantee of Dana Point and Natalie Braverman of Newport Beach advanced to the quarterfinals with straight-set victories.

Twenty of the 21 California-South teams advanced to today’s semifinals with victories Thursday in the Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championships in Bakersfield and San Bernardino.

Mission Viejo Mirage (under-18 girls), Southern California Blues of San Juan Capistrano (under-17 girls and under-14 girls) and NHB of Huntington Beach (under-13 boys) all advanced.
