CASTAIC LAKE--Largemouth bass fishing is good on the upper lake, for mostly smaller fish. Exception: Tom and Dominic Gabor, Studio City, caught six bass, including two 10-pounders on Stocker Trout lures while fishing with guide Bob Crupi. The lower lake is slow.

PYRAMID LAKE--Striped bass are beginning to boil sporadically, but for the most part they remain deep and are biting on anchovies. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are being caught on purple and brown plastics and catfish are biting on “anything that stinks.”

LAKE PIRU--Trollers using lead-core line and Needlefish are catching some trout, but the bite isn’t great. Bass fishing has improved, with night crawlers and plastic worms the top catchers.

CASITAS LAKE--Largemouth bass are very active. Josh Peters, Oak View, 15-pound bass on live shad. Terry Baker, Ventura, 15-pound bass on a Castaic Hard Trout. Catfish action is fair. Randy Crabtree, Ojai, seven catfish totaling 90 pounds, on mackerel at Orchard Point. Some trout.

CACHUMA LAKE--The trout bite remains decent for trollers using lead-core line at five colors. Bait fishermen using night crawlers and Power Bait are catching some too. Bass fishing is good on crawdads at the east end. Red-ear perch are biting on night crawlers.

JESS RANCH LAKES--Trout are biting in deeper water near the spillway in Lake 2. Inflated night crawlers and rainbow Power Bait are getting most. David Gonzales, Apple Valley, two catfish totaling 20-8, on mackerel.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Catfish limits are being caught on mackerel, night crawlers and marshmallow-mealworm combos fished at dusk. Crankbaits are working well for bass to six pounds.

OSO RESERVOIR--Bass are chasing shad and can be spotted fairly easily. An 8-4 was caught by Tom Ysais, Glendale, on a purple Power Worm. Catfish are aggressive and even plastic worms and spinnerbaits are getting them.

ANAHEIM LAKE--Catfish are biting well, day and night. A 16-6 caught on mackerel tops the list.

CORONA LAKE--Catfish are the main attraction, but crappie and an occasional trout are showing. A 16-7 catfish tops the list.

IRVINE LAKE--Still no huge catfish, but lots of average-sized ones. An 11-2 trout was caught on a night crawler at Santiago Flats, which is also producing decent crappie catches.

LAKE PERRIS--Trout are still cooperating for trollers using Needlefish and Kastmasters, with fish to four pounds. The bass are on the small side, biting on small plastics. The bluegill are even smaller and biting on crickets.

SILVERWOOD LAKE--Trollers using Needlefish are still catching some trout, but catfish are most active, biting on mackerel and chicken livers. A 9-5 largemouth bass was caught on a night crawler at Outhouse Cove.

BIG BEAR LAKE--The trout bite has slowed some, but the size of the fish hasn’t dropped. Top catch, a 10-pounder by Bill Wedgwood, Westminster.

GREEN VALLEY LAKE--Chris Barker, a 9-year-old from Santa Paula, caught an 8-pound trout that measured 27 inches. Nobody else could top that, but there were several limits of smaller trout. Some bass.

DIXON LAKE--Bass fishing remains fair on plastics and shiners during the day, but now that night fishing is open Wednesday through Saturday, the focus is on catfish and the fishing is fair.

LAKE JENNINGS--A 10-8 bass was caught on a plastic worm, but catfish is the predominant catch.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--They’re still pulling thousands of bluegill from San Vicente and Lower Otay. Bass bites are dropping off at all lakes and fewer big fish are being caught. A 34-pound blue catfish was caught on mackerel at San Vicente.

BISHOP AREA--Dan Munyon, San Diego, caught a 4-7 rainbow on a mini-jig in Bishop Creek.South Lake is on the slow side while North Lake, Lake Sabrina and Intake II are fair. Sleeper: Green Lake in the back-country above South Lake. The lake is ice free and the Kamloops are full of zip.

MAMMOTH LAKES AREA--All of Rock Creek Canyon is good. Crowley and Convict, though, are the places for big fish. Perch fishing is outstanding at Crowley. Alligator Point is producing trout catches averaging 2-3 pounds. Try trolling Thomas Buoyants. An 8-pounder was caught on a night crawler at Mamie.

JUNE LAKE LOOP--Silver Lake yielded a six-pound rainbow that struck a Thomas Buoyant, but all lakes are producing quality fish. Trollers are getting bigger fish, but not necessarily more.

BRIDGEPORT--The reservoir is best for big fish, with night crawler-flasher combos working. Needlefish and Thomas Buoyants are also good choices. Twin Lakes and Robinson Creek are well-stocked with pan-sized rainbows.
