The NHL announced Tuesday it will use a two-referee system for all playoff games.

The decision came after league officials were satisfied with the way the format worked in selected October games during the regular season when every NHL team played 10 home and 10 road games with two referees and two linesmen rather than one referee.

The New York Islanders traded defenseman Scott Lachance to the Montreal Canadiens for a third-round pick in the 1999 entry draft. . . . New York Ranger center Wayne Gretzky will be out for at least another week because of a neck injury. . . . The Atlanta Thrashers, a future expansion team, passed the 12,000 mark in season-ticket sales.
