Manhole Fire Causes Boston Airport Outage
A manhole fire in East Boston caused a temporary blackout at Logan International Airport on Sunday night and left hundreds of nearby residents without power.
The outage did not affect runway lights or air traffic but caused delays in boarding, MassPort spokesman Phil Orlandella said.
The manhole exploded in East Boston shortly before 9 p.m. EST, cutting power to the airport’s terminals and a six-block area. No injuries were reported.
Backup systems restored power within minutes to all but one of the airport’s terminals, Orlandella said.
About 200 people had to be temporarily evacuated from Logan’s international terminal when backup systems failed to come online.
