Amtrak Train Derails; 2 Slightly Hurt
An Amtrak train carrying 234 people derailed Friday and at least two people were slightly injured, authorities said.
Seven rear cars, two of them passenger cars, apparently jumped the track about 5:31 a.m. near Interstate 10 just east of Palm Springs.
An Amtrak spokesman said the two injuries were minor bumps.
None of the cars on the Sunset Limited, headed from Orlando, Fla., to Los Angeles, tipped over. The train’s speed was not immediately known and the cause of the derailment was not clear, officials said.
The incident was not related to Saturday’s magnitude 7.1 earthquake, centered about 50 miles northeast of Cathedral City, officials said. The quake last week derailed an Amtrak train in the high desert community of Ludlow. Four of the 155 passengers on that Chicago-to-Los Angeles train suffered minor injuries.
