A LITTLE HISTORY

With The Times All-Orange County football team marking its 40th anniversary this season, here is a selection of prominent all-county choices from Orange League schools:

George Fraser

Anaheim, 1968-69

The county’s dominant quarterback in the late ‘60s, Fraser ran and passed for 17 touchdowns as a senior and led Anaheim to a 27-6 victory over Santa Ana in an all-Sunset League Southern Section final.

Bob Acosta

Western, 1972

The Pioneers won 21 of the 23 games Acosta started at quarterback in his high school career, with each loss coming in a Southern Section title game. He ran and passed for more than 2,000 yards as a senior.

1998 IN REVIEW

The League Race: Brea Olinda dominated from beginning to end, scoring at least 31 points in each game while going undefeated in the league. Even the game that decided the championship was one-sided: the Wildcats defeated Western, 38-10, during the seventh week.

Game of the Year: Western trailed Valencia by 14 points in the first half before rallying for a 27-24 victory during the ninth week. Trevell Jackson, who rushed for 168 yards, sparked the rally by scoring two of his three touchdowns to narrow Valencia’s lead to 21-19. Jason Baughman’s 26-yard scoring pass to Jeff LaMendola late in the third quarter gave Western the lead for good.

Play of the Year: Magnolia took a 15-point halftime lead against Savanna during the seventh week. But a bad snap on a Sentinel punt attempt in the third quarter led to a hurried kick, which was blocked by Savanna’s Juan Rodriguez, who then fell on the ball in the end zone. It was the second Rebel touchdown in two minutes, and Savanna went on to win, 28-21, on Josh Cunningham’s one-yard plunge midway through the fourth quarter.

The MVP: Brea Olinda’s Scott Lieng, who led the Wildcats in touchdowns as a running back and anchored the defense at cornerback.

Playoff performance: What could have been an all-Orange League final in Division IX ended up an all-Suburban League championship game, after Brea Olinda lost to Mayfair, 26-13, and Western fell to La Mirada, 27-14, in the semifinals. Valencia lost in the first round.
