Out on the fringes where country mingles with folk, rock and pop, Kelly Willis has long been a respected figure whose career never quite got into gear. With her fourth album, “What I Deserve,” she’s been pulling in more raves, and her Friday show at the El Rey marks the Austin, Texas-based singer’s biggest L.A. appearance yet.

Supernatural thrillers seem to be the hot movie genre of the moment, and this weekend two more join the fray--MGM’s “Stigmata” and Artisan Entertainment’s “Stir of Echoes.” In “Stigmata,” Patricia Arquette plays a not particularly religious woman whose hands and feet bear wounds that resemble those associated with the Crucifixion. When it appears that she is also possessed by a demonic spirit, the Vatican dispatches an expert (Gabriel Byrne) to investigate. In “Stir of Echoes,” Kevin Bacon plays a cynic whose participation in a parlor game involving hypnotism turns sinister when, long after the game has ended, he finds himself plagued by searing headaches and horrific visions. Incidentally, “Stir of Echoes” is Artisan’s first release since its summer phenom “The Blair Witch Project.”

* “Stigmata” is rated R for intense violent sequences, language and some sexuality. “Stir of Echoes” is rated R for violence, sexuality and language. Both films open on Friday in general release.

8:30 pm: Music

For his penultimate weekend of the 78th Hollywood Bowl summer season, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra conductor John Mauceri leads his ensemble in “The Great American Concert--Swing Night.” Assisting in the festivities will be the swing band Royal Crown Revue; clarinetist Gary Bovyer, who will play Artie Shaw’s Clarinet Concerto; and actor James Naughton. All this and, at the end, the Bowl’s signature fireworks show.
