ORANGE COUNTY / PREP FOOTBALL : Champlin Strikes Early for Laguna Hills

Share

Things couldn’t have gone much better on both sides of the ball for Laguna Hills in its 34-0 victory over Jurupa Valley Friday night in a season opener at Mission Viejo High.

The young Hawk defense had a big night, but senior quarterback Brandon Champlin dominated the game, completing 14 of 21 passes for 224 yards and four touchdowns.

“I couldn’t be much happier,” Laguna Hills Coach Bruce Ingalls said. “This exceeded my expectations. Especially the defense coming out and getting a shutout.”

With a 21-0 first-quarter lead, the Hawks stopped two Jurupa Valley drives, once on downs at the Hawk 24 and once when Dustin Ashe-Everest recovered a fumble at the goal line before halftime.

Champlin staked Laguna Hills to a quick lead, as three of his first four completions went for touchdowns.

After C.J. Wilson recovered a Jaguar fumble on the game’s second play, Champlin found Jay Dale on a 20-yard fade for the first score. The second came on a 10-yard play-action pass to Nick Hmyak. Wilson caught his second touchdown--an 18-yarder--with 57 seconds left in the quarter.

Hmyak added a touchdown reception in the fourth quarter. Dale led all Hawk receivers with five catches for 82 yards and Ajay Allen rushed for 75 yards in 11 carries.
