Parade and Concert Celebrates Diversity
A parade celebrating the San Fernando Valley’s diversity will be held Sunday, followed by a daylong concert at Woodley Park.
The event is meant to call attention to the issue of gun violence and hate crimes in the Valley.
“It’s a way for the whole community to come together and make their voice known. Everyone has a right to live peacefully on this earth,” said the Rev. Alford J. Lewis, publicity director for Redeemed from Alcohol & Drugs, which is organizing the event.
The group, which is affiliated with North Hollywood-based Living for Christ Ministries, provides remedial education, literacy programs and conflict resolution training, said Lewis’ wife, Kaye M. Lewis, who serves as its executive director.
High school marching bands, drill teams, classic cars and antique fire engines, in addition to military and law enforcement personnel, are scheduled to participate in the parade starting at 10 a.m. at Victory and Balboa boulevards. The parade will proceed east on Victory Boulevard, turning south on Woodley Avenue until it reaches Woodley Park.
A free concert featuring jazz, reggae and gospel music is planned from noon to 7:30 p.m. at the park. There will be a speakers platform at 1 p.m., with comments from religious and law enforcement officials, Lewis said.
