A 22-year-old motorist was killed Tuesday morning on the Foothill Freeway after a wrong-way driver crashed head-on into his car, authorities said.

Charles K. Bandaki, 50, was driving a 1977 Ford east in the westbound lanes of the Foothill Freeway near Lincoln Avenue when it collided with a 1995 Honda, killing its lone occupant, said California Highway Patrol Officer Frank Sansone. Michael John Sartinsky, of La Crescenta, died at the scene.

It was not known why Bandaki, of Glendale, was going the wrong way on the freeway, Sansone said. He was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital in critical condition, he said.

Three lanes of the freeway remained closed from 2:14 a.m. until about 7 a.m., Sansone said.
