A mother riding in a car driven by her daughter was killed when a pickup truck slammed into them as the daughter tried to make a left turn, authorities said Sunday. Carmen Ascencio, 55, of Sun Valley, was in a 1988 Honda Civic with Yadira del Carmen Ascencio, 19, about 6 a.m. Friday when the daughter tried to turn left onto Whitsett Avenue from Roscoe Boulevard in the North Hollywood-Sun Valley area, said Officer Dan Henry of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Valley Traffic Bureau.

The daughter continued through the intersection when the traffic light turned yellow, Henry said, and the car was struck by a Ford F-150 driving toward them from the opposite direction.

Although she was wearing her seat belt, Carmen Ascencio suffered massive chest trauma and died about a half-hour later at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, Henry said.

The daughter, also of Sun Valley, suffered minor injuries, Henry said. The truck driver and passenger were uninjured.

Henry said no charges would be filed and that investigations into the accident were continuing.
