2 Who Have Made a Difference

Share

It takes all kinds of organizations to keep the wheels turning in Ventura County. We have an extra measure of appreciation for those dedicated to speaking up for the little guy, to making sure that quiet voices are not drowned out amid the clamor of government and commerce.

Two local groups in that category announced last week that they are looking for new leadership as their chief executives depart for new career opportunities.

Although the organizations are quite different, both are essential to maintaining the balance of interests in Ventura County. We salute their departing directors and acknowledge the importance of their work.

* El Concilio del Condado de Ventura: In his five years as executive director of Ventura County’s highest-profile Latino advocacy group, Francisco Dominguez has emphasized empowerment, education and citizenship for the county’s sizable Latino population. He has overseen El Concilio’s campaigns to combat youth violence, to curb alcohol-related problems, to help permanent residents achieve full citizenship and to compile an accurate count during the 2000 census. He plans to pursue private business opportunities in retail and consulting, and is running for reelection to the Oxnard Elementary School District board.

* Ventura County Taxpayers Assn.: In seven years at the helm of this watchdog group, Mike Saliba conducted research to guide the board of directors in formulating policy positions, crafted its public statements and testified at local government hearings. Although not Ventura County’s most outspoken or quotable taxpayer advocate, Saliba is consistently its most thoroughly informed. He will become the administrator of Ventura County’s oldest and largest accounting firm, Soares, Sandall, Bernacchi & Petrovich.

Both of these organizations give their constituents greater influence in Ventura County’s decision-making process. We hope each finds a strong new director to build upon the worthy accomplishments of those who are moving on.
