Kennedy in Seventh Heaven on Hits by Velasco, Montes
Karla Velasco doubled home the tying run in the seventh inning, then scored on a single by Ryane Montes to give Kennedy High a 2-1 victory over San Fernando in a Valley Mission League opener at San Fernando.
Montes (6-3) pitched a five-hitter, struck out two and walked none for the Golden Cougars (10-3).
Michelle Raigoza (5-2) allowed four hits for the Tigers (11-3).
Sylmar 9, Reseda 0--Casondra Acosta pitched a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts and hit a double for the Spartans in a Valley Mission League game at Reseda.
Tatiana Lee and Krystal Mejia each had two hits for Sylmar (8-4, 1-0).
Poly 10, Canoga Park 1--Nicole La Brunda had two hits, two runs batted in and scored two runs for the Parrots in a Sunset Six League opener at Canoga Park.
La Brunda’s two-run home run in the first gave Poly (4-8, 1-0) a 3-0 lead.
Monroe 8, Van Nuys 4--The Vikings rallied from a 4-1 deficit, scoring six runs in the fourth of a Valley Mission League opener at Monroe.
Veronica Alcarez had two hits and three runs batted in for Monroe (3-5), which benefited from 13 bases on balls.
Royal 1, Moorpark 0--Nicole Hartfield singled home Nazaneen Rafik in the third inning for the Highlanders (5-6, 1-3) in a Marmonte League game at Moorpark.
Simi Valley 4, Agoura 3--Brittney Green hit a run-scoring double and scored a run for the Pioneers (8-3, 3-1) in a Marmonte League victory at Simi Valley.
Rio Mesa 7, Channel Islands 0--Sophomore Chanel Tripp pitched a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts, and Monique Barretto had a triple, two RBIs and scored once for the Spartans (7-3-1, 4-1) in a Pacific View League game at Rio Mesa.
Camarillo 3, Oxnard 0--Kathryn Nevard (8-3) pitched a one-hitter with 16 strikeouts for the Scorpions in a Pacific View League victory at Camarillo.
Megan Edge’s two-run single highlighted a three-run sixth inning for Camarillo (8-3, 4-1).
La Reina 8, Fillmore 0--Mackenzie Vandergeest had a triple, two home runs, six RBIs and scored three times for the Regents (6-4, 1-0) in a Tri-Valley League game at Fillmore.
Santa Paula 6, Santa Clara 2--Jalena Martinez pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and Carla Berumen had three hits and scored two runs for the Cardinals in a Frontier League victory at Santa Clara.
Jessieka Mata had two hits and scored two runs for Santa Paula (7-2, 3-1).
Calabasas 2, Oak Park 0--Amy Rosson (9-1) pitched a two-hitter and struck out 12, and Krystle Chamberlain had two hits and scored two runs as the Coyotes (9-3)stretched their winning streak to six in a nonleague game at Calabasas.
Melissa Johnson (3-2) of Oak Park pitched a six-hitter with 11 strikeouts and didn’t allow an earned run.
Cindy Verity had two hits for the Eagles (4-5).
Village Christian 5, Western Christian 0--Robin Pearce had two hits, including a two-run double, and preserved the shutout for the Crusaders in a nonleague game at Village Christian.
Pearce tagged out Heather Wheeler, who was trying to score from third base on a pitch thrown in the dirt by Jessica McIntosh in the sixth inning.
McIntosh pitched a three-hitter with six strikeouts and one walk.
