Coogan’s 1-Hitter Stymies Patriots

Melissa Coogan pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts and El Camino Real High defeated Birmingham, 10-0, in a West Valley League softball game on Wednesday at El Camino Real.

The defending City Section champion Conquistadores (10-2-1, 2-0 in league play) pounded Mellisa Santana of Birmingham (4-4, 0-2) for seven runs in the first inning.

Jacqui Goodchild had four hits and Christina Enea had three runs batted in for El Camino Real.

Santana spoiled Coogan’s bid for a no-hitter with a triple.

Cleveland 1, Chatsworth 0--Kristy Schultz scored on a second-inning squeeze by Sarah Johnson and the Cavaliers won a West Valley League game at Cleveland.

Laura Demetrion pitched a three-hitter for the Cavaliers (8-5, 1-1).

Cassy Shires struck out six for Chatsworth (8-8, 1-1).

Granada Hills 3, Taft 1--Michelle Lugo pitched a three-hitter and the Highlanders (6-8-1, 2-0) won a West Valley League game at Granada Hills.

Alemany 4, Flintridge Sacred Heart 0--Sophomore infielder Kaitlin Reiss, who hit seven home runs as a freshman, hit a home run for the Indians (6-6, 1-0) in a Mission League game at Alemany.

Annalisa Allen added a two-run triple for the Indians.

Adrian Herlache (10-3) allowed three earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks for Flintridge Sacred Heart (10-3, 0-1).

Sarita Contreras (5-5) of Alemany scattered seven hits.

Montclair Prep 4, Notre Dame 2--Justine Haeussler had two hits and the Mounties (7-2) won a nonleague game at Franklin Field.

Monique Lovell of Montclair Prep pitched a five-hitter with two strikeouts.

Notre Dame had runners on first and second with none out in the seventh but Lovell got two forceouts and a popup to end the game.

Cornerstone Christian 17, L.A. Lutheran 0--Julie Hartnell (6-1) struck out 12 and pitched her third no-hitter for the Eagles in a nonleague game at L.A. Lutheran that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Tiffany Monzo was four for four with three doubles and three RBIs for Cornerstone Christian (8-1), ranked No. 1 in Division VI.
