Hart’s Matter Makes Stanford Commitment

Quarterback Kyle Matter, who passed for 3,774 yards and 48 touchdowns as a junior at Hart High last season, has committed to Stanford.

He will become the third consecutive quarterback from the Newhall campus to accept a scholarship to an NCAA Division I-A school.

David Neill started in 1997 and went to Nevada and Kyle Boller started in 1998 and signed with California. Both have become starters in college.

Matter’s decision to sign with Stanford could lead to the battle of the Kyles in the Bay Area in a couple of years and force Hart coaches to choose allegiance between Matter and Boller.

“I think they’ll have to be rooting for the offenses,” Matter said.

Matter completed 67% of his passes in leading Hart to the Southern Section Division III championship last season.

He has a 4.55 grade-point average and scored 1460 on the Scholastic Assessment Test.

Matter made an unofficial visit to Stanford during spring break and fell in love with the campus.

When Coach Tyrone Willingham called Thursday night to offer a scholarship, Matter said it took him “about a second” to accept.

“I think people are going to be shocked when they see him this year,” offensive coordinator Dean Herrington said. “He’s so much better.”

Matter was clocked running 40 yards in 4.69 seconds at a combine last week at USC.
