Gurza’s Delayed U.S. Citizenship

Share

* Re “INS Glitch Keeping This Voter Home on Election Day,” Nov. 7: I find it amusing that Agustin Gurza is complaining about his delay in becoming an American citizen. For someone who regularly derides the United States and talks about Mexico and its cultural traditions as superior, it seems that this professional Mexican should seek his place in Mexico, not the U.S.

His weekly diatribes toward this country and continuous put-downs get old. Mr. Gurza, seek your dreams in the country you love, Mexico, and leave the United States to those of us who are proud to live in this great nation.

Mexican American, yes I am. American, that’s who I really am.

By the way, as an ex-Marine, I say this to you: Semper Fi.

Although my roots are decidedly more Gaelic than Hispanic, I regularly read Gurza’s column. I usually find his views insightful, but I was sadly shocked at the revelation in his election day column that he has only recently applied for U.S. citizenship after living here legally since childhood. Regardless of how “complex” the reason, I find it unconscionable that a journalist for a major metropolitan newspaper who regularly shares his political views has never bothered to become a citizen and vote in an election.

Blaming his inability to vote in this election on La Migra misses the point by miles. Did all those previous elections escape his notice? If you’re going to comment on politics and influence public opinion, you had best be participating in the process.
