Elbow Pain Persists For Rockies’ Walker

With season-ending elbow surgery looking more likely, Larry Walker has hired a personal trainer and a nutritionist in an attempt to end his annual injury woes.

Walker, on the disabled list since Aug. 21, hoped to return to the Colorado Rockies’ lineup this week but complained of pain in his right elbow after taking batting practice and playing catch Saturday.

Although no decision had been made, arthroscopic surgery probably will be required to remove a bone spur from Walker’s elbow, which has plagued him throughout the season.

“That’s been discussed,” Walker said Monday. “I think it might happen. I don’t know when, if it’s now or at the end of the season. I’m still in the dark on everything.”

For 25 years, the left-field foul pole at Fenway Park has reminded Boston fans of Carlton Fisk. Now there’s something along the right-field line to remember him.

The Red Sox retired Fisk’s No. 27, hanging it on the right-field facade with the retired numbers of Bobby Doerr (1), Joe Cronin (4), Carl Yastrzemski (8) and Ted Williams (9), as well as Jackie Robinson (42). Fisk is the only native New Englander among the bunch.

“It was like I was somebody important,” Fisk said. “I think when you play, you never really realize the impact you had.”
