Students to Attend Leadership Event

Students from five Simi Valley high schools will take part in a youth leadership conference Tuesday at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.

More than 150 students from Apollo, Grace Brethren, Royal, Santa Susana and Simi Valley high schools are expected to participate in “Leadership 2000 and Beyond,” which will feature a series of lectures and a museum tour.

Adult participants in the Simi Valley Leadership 2000 program organized the youth leadership day as their community service project, said Lowell Schultz, assistant superintendent of the Simi Valley Unified School District.

The project is sponsored by the Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce.

“The Ronald Reagan library has done a lot of planning of leadership events for high school students, so this fits in perfectly with that,” Schultz said.

City Councilman Glen Becerra will serve as master of ceremonies and will speak about leadership in government.

Navy Cmdr. Kevin Carey will discuss traits and qualities of leadership. Dr. Margaret Peterson, president of Simi Valley Hospital and Health Care Services, will speak about leadership in business.

Lee Bycel, president of Brandeis-Bardin Institute in Simi Valley, will serve as the keynote speaker and discuss ethics in leadership.

Other speakers are Dick Wright of the Simi Valley Police Department, Michael Carney of Pacific Bell, Diana Muscolino of Family Health Care Medical Group Inc., Laurie Koch of the Simi Valley Parent Teacher Student Assn. Council and Mark Burson, executive director of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation.

The conference will run from 7:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. at the library, 40 Presidential Drive.
