Rights Group’s Fliers OKd at Welfare Offices
County officials have agreed to let a welfare-rights group distribute leaflets at two welfare offices and talk with applicants who show up, lawyers for the group said.
The move settles a federal lawsuit filed on behalf of Supportive Parents Information Network, which was denied access to offices in El Cajon and Chula Vista even though other groups had been allowed. The suit was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union in San Diego.
Activists were concerned that county welfare workers were not advising applicants of available educational opportunities and other services.
Under the settlement, the group can put its fliers in racks at agency offices and speak with welfare applicants, as long as it does not interfere with county business.
