A project to turn an old rail yard into a city park is hundreds of millions of dollars over budget and almost three years behind schedule, a newspaper reported Sunday.

Millennium Park was supposed to open last summer as part of the city’s millennium celebration.

The park now is scheduled to be completed by 2003 and its cost has ballooned from $150 million to almost $400 million, the Chicago Tribune reported Sunday.

When Mayor Richard M. Daley announced plans for the park in 1998, he said it would be funded by private donations and fees from a new parking garage under the park.
