A security guard at a Costa Mesa apartment complex was beaten early Saturday morning and remained in a coma throughout the day, authorities said.

Police found Mohamed Slam, 26, of Westminster unconscious with severe head injuries in the parking lot of the Villa Siena apartments in the 1200 block of Adams Avenue shortly before 1 a.m.

Laien Kawakami, 20, of Anaheim, and Chuck Raymond, 20, of Costa Mesa, were arrested after police found them walking through the complex with blood-stained shoes and clothing, said Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Mike Ginther.

The two men face charges of attempted murder and were being held in Orange County Jail on $250,000 bail.

Investigators do not believe the attack was racially motivated, Ginther said.

“The suspects have friends who live in the complex, and witnesses said the security guard has had to shoo them away for drinking beer and hanging out,” Ginther said.

Ginther said violence hasn’t been a problem at the complex, located down the street from Orange Coast College.

“But there are a lot of college parties and drinking there,” he said.
