What: “Monday Night Football” radio pregame and halftime shows

Where: KNX (1070), tonight, 5:45.

Jim Gray, who works as a reporter on the CBS Radio/Westwood “Monday Night Football” broadcasts, has come up with something different that should prove to be interesting.

Gray will moderate a roundtable discussion among five broadcasters who have served as hosts of over-the-air television network NFL pregame shows. The broadcasters will be current hosts Jim Nantz of CBS and James Brown of Fox, plus former hosts Brent Musburger, Bob Costas and Greg Gumbel.

The segment will be taped today and broadcast on both the pregame show and halftime show tonight.

“I don’t think anything like this has been done before,” Nantz said. “Jim Gray deserves a lot of credit for putting it together. The only problem is, we’re probably not going to have enough time to talk about all we’d like to talk about.”

Nantz said, in particular, he wants to hear from Musburger, the host during the heyday of CBS’ “The NFL Today.”

“I remember when I was growing up in Colts Neck, N.J., and watching ‘NFL Today’ and being so enamored,” Nantz said. “That show is the main reason I wanted to get into sports broadcasting. When I first came to CBS, I dreamed of someday hosting the show.”

Nantz is in his fourth season as the host of “The NFL Today.”

Gray said among the topics that will be discussed will be the many characters who have worked on the shows, from Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder to Terry Bradshaw.

Another topic will be how “The NFL Today” provided a platform for women sports broadcasters at a time when there were only a handful. Phyllis George and Jayne Kennedy became household names because of “The NFL Today.”
