* Saddleback College linebacker Chip Kimmich has accepted a scholarship to San Jose State, Saddleback Coach Mark McElroy said. Kimmich is from Irvine High.

BASEBALL

Former Long Beach State player Jason Giambi, the American League Most Valuable Player last season with the Oakland A’s, is scheduled to return for the school’s alumni game at 1 p.m. Saturday at Blair Field.

Other former players expected for the game include Jeff Liefer, Marcus Jones and Rocky Biddle.

* Former Saddleback College pitcher Jean-Paul Gauthier will play for Hawaii this season, Saddleback College Coach Jack Hodges said.

* Angels Days will take place Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Epicenter, home of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, the Angels’ affiliate in the Class-A California League.

The event, which features a workout by Angel major and minor league players, is free and open to the public from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. A home-run contest will be held, prizes will be given away and fans can collect player autographs.

MOTORSPORTS

Steve Greinke and Kory Halopoff, both of Orange, finished first and second in the SCORE Lites class at the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge off-road race.

Among the county’s other top performers at the weekend event were second-place Jeff Quinn of Irvine, who finished 3:38 behind Steve Sourapas of Rancho Santa Fe in Class 1; second place Daniel Fresh of San Juan Capistrano, who was 5:07 behind Joel Stankavich of Barstow in Class 7S; Mark Post and Jerry Whelchel of Laguna Hills, who finished third in Trophy Truck; and John Griffin of Mission Viejo, who was third in Class Stock Full.
