A Pacific storm that rolled into the Southland on Sunday afternoon--packing high winds in the mountain passes and rain throughout the Los Angeles Basin--is a precursor to an even stronger storm expected to hit Tuesday, forecasters said.

About half an inch of rain is expected to fall through today, according to Weather Central Inc. which provides forecasting services for The Times.

The California Highway Patrol closed the Golden State Freeway in the Grapevine area just before 3 p.m. Sunday when 45 to 70 mph winds struck, causing dangerous conditions, Officer Charles Blair said. The closure may remain in effect today.

A second storm bringing heavier rains is expected by Tuesday, according to Weather Central Inc.

That storm could produce up to 3 inches of rain in the L.A. area and a foot of fresh snow above the 7,000-foot level. The raincould cause more flooding Tuesday, forecasters said.

So far this year, the L.A. area has received 14.46 inches of rain, more than twice the normal of 6.3 inches, according to Weather Central Inc.

The wet weather should clear temporarily by Thursday but another storm could move in from up the coast after that.
