Capistrano Valley Squeaks Past Irvine in Five Games

UCLA-bound senior Kris Kraushaar had 43 kills for Irvine, but host Capistrano Valley, ranked third in Orange County, came back to defeat the No. 7 Vaqueros, 14-16, 15-6, 5-15, 15-10, 15-13, Tuesday in a nonleague boys’ volleyball match.

Nic Vislay, who has signed with UC Irvine, had 26 kills and Chris Hermanas had 12 for the Cougars (3-0), who rallied from an 8-2 deficit in the fifth game getting a spark from back-row specialist Dickens Tai.

Zach Jardine had 20 kills for Irvine (2-1).

In other nonleague matches:

No. 1 Santa Margarita 3, Esperanza 0--Blake Robinson and Travis Toch each had 12 kills for visiting Santa Margarita (4-0), which won, 15-4, 15-13, 15-7.

No. 6 Newport Harbor 3, Laguna Beach 0--Senior outside hitter Blake Tippett, who has committed to USC, had 14 kills for Newport Harbor, which won, 15-6, 15-10, 15-9.

In pool play at the La Habra baseball tournament:

La Habra 3, Santiago 2--La Habra (5-1) scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning off loser Brian Pilkington (2-1).

Derek Currey’s two-out single in drove in the winning run for the Highlanders.

In nonleague games:

Capistrano Valley 3-7, Long Beach Millikan 2-3--Sophomore shortstop Adam Sorgi hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth in the first game for Capistrano Valley, the top-ranked team in Southern Section Division I. Millikan is ranked ninth in Division I.

No. 4 Esperanza 6-10, No. 7 Canyon 5-6--Greg Farrell had four hits in the doubleheader, including a homer and double for the host Aztecs (6-1). David Nicholson was three for three in the first game for Esperanza. Canyon is 4-3.

Foothill 11-9, Tustin 4-2--First baseman Chad Bigler scored two runs and knocked in three with a bases-clearing triple in the third inning of the first game for Foothill (4-2).

In nonleague boys’ golf:

Corona del Mar 197, No. 8 Aliso Niguel 202--Matt Schreiber and Joseph Kim shot two-over 37s at Newport Beach Country Club for Aliso Niguel.

In the Saddleback Valley softball tournament:

Dana Hills 3, No. 6 Laguna Hills 0--Candace Rainwater pitched a three hitter and had a triple and two RBIs for Dana Hills (4-1).

In nonleague games:

Costa Mesa 7, La Quinta 5--Ann Marie Topps’ two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh lifted the Mustangs (5-1-1).

No. 4 Kennedy 2, No. 3 Pacifica 1--Lorraine Geiger hit a two-run single in the first for visiting Kennedy (2-1). Junior Michelle Turner pitched a six-hitter with 10 strikeouts for the Fighting Irish.

Northwood 5, Newport Harbor 2 (8)--Sophomore Allison Lewis pitched her first no-hitter and went two for four with a triple and two RBIs for Northwood (1-3).

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

Corona del Mar 10, L.A. Brentwood 8--Garrett Snyder’s comeback victory in the last set lifted Corona del Mar (4-0), ranked third in Southern Section Division I. Snyder, a sophomore, trailed Brentwood’s No. 1 player, Sean McKeon, 3-4, in the final set, before rallying for a 7-6 victory.

Brentwood (3-1) is ranked third in Division II.

No. 5 Servite 10, No. 8 Canyon 8--Undefeated Servite (5-0), led by Patrick Buchanan, Jonathan Sanchez and Andy Chen, won eight of nine singles sets. Canyon is 5-1.
