Coogan Hits the Perfecta for El Camino Real, 10-0

Melissa Coogan pitched a perfect game and El Camino Real High defeated Birmingham, 10-0, in a West Valley League softball opener Tuesday at Birmingham.

Coogan, who has signed with Hawaii, struck out 10 for the Conquistadores (10-2), ranked No. 8 in the region by The Times.

“She had a great day [Tuesday],” assistant coach Bob Fischer of El Camino Real said. “She looked awesome, she was hitting the corners. She was really spotting the ball very nice [Tuesday].”

Coogan had two hits, a run batted in and scored two runs.

Megan Zwoyer had three hits and two RBIs, and Kelsey Walker had a three-run home run for El Camino Real.

Birmingham is 11-4, 0-1 in league play.

Granada Hills 6, Taft 0--Jill Leahy and Michelle Lugo combined on a no-hitter for the Highlanders (5-6) in a West Valley League opener at Woodland Hills Recreation Center.

Leahy struck out three and walked three in five innings.

Chatsworth 10, Cleveland 1--Rebecca McIntire hit a triple and three-run home run in the first of a West Valley League opener at Chatsworth.

McIntire finished with three hits and four RBIs for Chatsworth (6-4), which scored eight runs in the first inning.

Cassie Shires (6-4) struck out 11, allowed five hits and walked none.

Kennedy 12, Monroe 3--Erika Navarro hit a two-run home run, a two-run triple and a sacrifice fly for the Golden Cougars (5-3, 1-0) in a Valley Mission League game at Monroe.

Navarro (3-2) pitched a six-hitter with two strikeouts and one walk.

Daisy Esquivel tripled and doubled and drove in two runs for the Vikings.

Sylmar 9, Van Nuys 0--Casondra Acosta pitched a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts for the Spartans (6-4, 1-0) in a Valley Mission League victory at Sylmar.

Acosta (3-3) was three for three with two RBIs.

San Fernando 6, Reseda 0--Lorene Arreguin and Rosanna Gurado each had two hits and two RBIs for the Tigers (7-1) in a Valley Mission League opener at San Fernando.

Rio Mesa 1, Camarillo 0--Chanel Tripp struck out 15, allowed three hits and walked three in a Pacific View League victory at Rio Mesa (6-5, 3-0).

Anita Urias hit a run-scoring single with two out in the first.

Notre Dame 2, Flintridge Sacred Heart 1--Megan Hayes hit a tie-breaking, two-out single in the sixth of a Mission League game at Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks Park.

Hayes singled home Cheryl Acosta, whose RBI double with two out tied the score.

Simi Valley 2, Royal 0--Amber Brazier’s two-run double in the fourth lifted the Pioneers in a Marmonte League game at Rancho Simi Community Park.

Chanel Roehner (2-1) pitched a three-hitter with nine strikeouts for the Pioneers (5-4-1, 2-2).

La Canada 1, South Pasadena 0--Sophomore Danielle Mellin pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts in her first start for the Spartans (5-0, 3-0) in a Rio Hondo League game at La Canada.

Mellin retired 16 consecutive batters from the second to the seventh before allowing a one-out single by Ilene Gonzalez.

Lauren Guza hit a two-out single, run-scoring single in the third.

South Pasadena is 3-8, 2-1.

Village Christian 1, Schurr 0--Freshman Lauren Nydam allowed one hit and struck out a career-high 17 for the Crusaders (9-0) in a nonleague game at Schurr.

Oaks Christian 11, Pasadena Marshall 0--Ashlee Freeman pitched a no-hitter, losing a perfect game on an error, in a nonleague game at North Ranch Park that was halted after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Freeman (11-2-1) struck out 12 and walked none for Oaks Christian (11-2-1), and had four hits, including two home runs, and five RBIs.

Paraclete 1, Highland 0--Sara Gonzales (6-1) pitched a one-hitter, and doubles by Tayler Wilson and Melissa Little in the fourth gave the Spirits (7-2) a nonleague victory at Highland.
