Chad Carvin of Mission Viejo finished the 800-meter freestyle in 7 minutes 56.39 seconds at the USA Swimming national championships to win his 15th national title at Austin, Texas.

Carvin, an Olympic silver medalist, is a favorite today in the 400 freestyle. He is seeded second behind Klete Keller of USC.

Diana Munz, an Olympic gold medalist, won the women’s 1,500 freestyle in 16:27.74 to take her 14th national title.

The first- and second-place finishers at nationals will advance to the world championships July 22-29 in Japan.

Ian Thorpe set his second world record in as many nights, breaking Pieter van den Hoogendband’s mark for 200 meters at the Australian swimming championships in Hobart. Thorpe was timed in 1:44.69, lowering the mark of 1:45.35 set by Van Den Hoogendband of the Netherlands at last year’s Sydney Olympics.
