Bozeman To Be Honored at Wooden Award Dinner

Cedric Bozeman of Mater Dei, Tyson Chandler of Compton Dominguez, Errick Craven of Torrance Bishop Montgomery, Isaiah Fox of Santa Monica Crossroads, Tim Drisdom of Downey Calvary Chapel and Kenton Paulino of Fremont will be honored April 6 at the annual John Wooden Award dinner at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles.

The players, recognized for outstanding play, will receive their awards before dinner. The winner of the Wooden Award, presented annually to the nation’s top college basketball player, will be announced in a ceremony later in the evening.

FOOTBALL

Scott McMahon, punter for Santa Ana College, has signed with UC San Diego, Santa Ana officials announced.

McMahon, who played at Ocean View High, averaged 36 yards per kick last season, ranking fifth in the Mission Conference.

* The National Football Foundation recently honored 45 Orange County high school seniors and one community college player for academic achievements during their careers.

Esperanza running back Temitope Sonuyi was awarded the Paul Cleary Scholarship as the top scholar-athlete. Other scholarship winners included running back Blake West of Calvary Chapel, quarterback David Miller of Tustin, linebacker Minh Nguyen of Loara and quarterback Jason Ward of Capistrano Valley Christian.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Jamie Surprenant has been hired as an assistant coach for the UC Irvine women’s soccer team, school officials announced.

Surprenant, who played at Cal State Bakersfield, was an assistant at Boise State last season. She was a graduate assistant at Bakersfield in 1999.

SOFTBALL

Washington native Holly Martinez, who has played five field positions in her career, has signed to play at Vanguard, according to Lion Coach Beth Renkoski.

Martinez led Skyline High of Sammamish, Wash., to the 1999 state 3A title. Last season, as a junior, she hit .386 and led Skyline in hits, runs, triples, home runs and game-winning runs batted in. She can play third base, shortstop, second base, catcher and the outfield.
