Release Hearing Date Set for Mass Murderer
A judge Friday set a Sept. 24 hearing to determine whether the man who killed seven people in a 1976 shooting rampage at Cal State Fullerton should be released from a state mental hospital.
Edward Allaway, 62, was found not guilty by reason of insanity to seven murder and two attempted-murder charges. Some doctors at Patton State Hospital have concluded that Allaway is now sane and should be released. Orange County prosecutors oppose the release.
If Allaway is freed, he would be supervised by state authorities for one year, after which he could apply for unrestricted freedom.
