Murder Suspect Denied Request for New Lawyer
A San Leandro sausage maker, charged with killing three meat inspectors, has been denied a request for a new lawyer.
Stuart Alexander wanted his public defenders replaced by private attorneys Jack Leavitt and Jim Crew at the county’s expense. Alameda County Superior Court Judge Jon Rolefson refused the request after Leavitt argued for the change.
Alexander inherited the successful Santos Linguisa Factory in San Leandro from his parents, but he is now in poor financial shape.
He has been in jail since the slaying of inspector Bill Shaline and two U.S. Department of Agriculture officers, Jean Hillary and Tom Quadros, in June 2000.
According to the prosecutors’ death-penalty case, Alexander allegedly shot the trio at the factory and chased and shot at a fourth inspector, who managed to escape.
