UCLA Loses to Michigan State

Syreeta Bromfield scored 17 points and Kristin Haynie added 16 as Michigan State beat UCLA, 67-63, in the championship game of the Spartan Chevrolet Classic Saturday at East Lansing, Mich.

The Spartans (2-0) opened up a four-point lead at the half, 25-21, and held that margin at the end of the game as both teams added 42 points in the second.

Michelle Greco led UCLA (1-1) with 36 points and nine rebounds, but the effort wasn’t enough to overcome the Spartans.

Cindy Oparah had 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead visiting UC Irvine to a 59-48 victory over San Francisco in the season opener for both teams.

Wendy Gabbe had 13 points and Brandy Hudson had 11 points and 12 rebounds for Irvine, which outscored the Dons, 33-22, in the second half.

Stacey Dales scored 16 points as No. 4 Oklahoma cruised to a 73-38 victory over Oral Roberts in the Bertha Teague Classic at Stillwater, Okla. The Sooners and Oral Roberts met in the first round of the NCAA tournament last season, with Oklahoma winning, 70-64. But this one wasn’t close after the midway point of the first half. Caton Hill added 12 points, and Rosalind Ross 10 for the Sooners, who came up with 31 turnovers, 18 of them steals. Cory Williston scored 11 for Oral Roberts (0-2), which shot just 15-of-53 from the field. Krista Ragan, last season’s Mid-Continent Conference player of the year, was held scoreless on 0-for-7 shooting. Oklahoma had 11 steals in the first half, five of which resulted in layups.... Lindsay Wilson scored 21 points and Angie Welle added 15 to lead No. 8 Iowa State to a 68-50 victory over Marquette in the season opener for both teams at Milwaukee. Tracy Gahan had 12 points and Mary Cofield 11 for Iowa State, which shot 48% (25 of 56) from the field and held the Golden Eagles to 29% (15 of 58). Kristi Johnson scored 13 points to lead Marquette, but she was the only Golden Eagle in double figures. The Cyclones trailed 11-9 before going on an 18-5 run to take command.... Carisse Moody had 21 points and eight rebounds as No. 10 North Carolina State edged Drake, 64-61, in the championship game of the GlaxoSmithKline Invitational at Raleigh, N.C. Nanna Rivers added 11 points and four assists and Amy Simpson scored 10 points for the Wolfpack (2-0). Carla Bennett led Drake (1-1) with 22 points on 11-of-19 shooting. Reserve Ja’Nae Mosley and Stephanie Schmitz each added 10 points. Jayme Anderson, who had 12 points in Drake’s 76-58 first-round win over Alabama-Birmingham, was held to six points Saturday. Her three-point attempt at the buzzer bounced off the rim.... Ugo Oha scored 17 points and had seven rebounds as No. 20 George Washington won its season opener, rallying from an eight-point deficit in the second half to defeat visiting Hartford, 70-61. George Washington (1-0) trailed by as many as eight in the second half, but tied Hartford (0-2) with 5:33 left. George Washington finally broke away with two fastbreak layups by Erica Lawrence to start an 8-2 run and take a 62-55....Amanda Levens had a career-high 30 points to lead No. 22 Arizona State to a 72-67 victory over St. Peter’s in the season opener for both teams at Tempe. Levens scored seven straight points in the final two minutes for the defending Pac-10 champions. Levens got past her previous best with the last point of the game, a free throw. Melody Johnson had 12 points and eight rebounds for the Sun Devils, who outrebounded St. Peter’s 45-34....Julie Butler had 21 points and nine rebounds as Santa Clara upset No. 25 Utah, 67-59, in the first day of the round-robin Golden Gopher Classic at Minneapolis. Lauren Beckman was seven of 11 from the field for 17 points and had 11 rebounds and three blocks for the Utes. Erin Gibbons scored 18 points, and Lindsay Herber added 13 for Utah, which had 23 turnovers compared with the Broncos’ 10. Santa Clara faces Minnesota in today’s championship. Utah will play Butler in the consolation game.
