Captain Steve Is Sold, Racing Career Is Over

Share

Captain Steve, who earned his biggest win earlier this year when he won the Dubai World Cup, has been retired and will be a stallion in Japan.

A 4-year-old son of Fly So Free trained by Bob Baffert, Captain Steve was sold to Japanese interests for a reported $5 million by owner Mike Pegram, who had purchased the colt for $70,000 as a yearling.

After his win in Dubai, Captain Steve was beaten in what turned out to be his final four races. He was the beaten favorite in the Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs and the Hollywood Gold Cup, then was unable to threaten in the San Diego Handicap at Del Mar before finishing fourth in the Pacific Classic about two months ago.

Victorious in the Hollywood Futurity as a 2-year-old and the winner--over eventual 2000 horse-of-the-year Tiznow--in the Swaps Stakes at Hollywood Park at age 3, Captain Steve earned $6,828,356 in his career.
