Language is no trivial matter. It affects how we think and, therefore, how we act (“Barking Up the Wrong Tree,” editorial, June 30). As a rescuer who fought successfully for new licensing legislation to encourage people to spay and neuter their pets, I’m convinced that guardianship will promote greater care and responsibility toward companion animals, particularly with children who will see themselves as guardians of their animals rather than owners of property.
